So, if my girlfriends child has a baby does that make me a grandpaw? I think that if you have never even helped raise a kid you should not get to be called a grandparent. I mean, come on, I was never ever even a parent for petes sake! Donnas kids were in their twenties when I met her. What do you people think? Am I a grandpaw?

I'd say, you're just "[insert your real name here]" at least while you have time to think about it. If there's some genuine bonding and affection, you could look into calling yourself Uncle [insert your real name here]--even though you're not an uncle, some friends bequeath that title to a good and close friend. If you marry your girlfriend, you're really more of a "step-grandfather" and we just don't usually call people that. This is tricky - you don't want to confuse the kid, but if you intend on fulfilling the role of grandfather someday, then by all means you deserve a more fitting "title". Maybe "Pap Canuck" (where Canuck is substituted with your real name) would be the way to go without confusing too many people. I personally, called my real grandfather on my dad's side, "Pap Pap". I think what you need, is merely a name that honestly fits your true role in the kid's life--something for the kid to call you, and the level of familiarity associated with the name should reflect and be appropriate to the role you intend on having in the kid's life. :-) That can be achieved easily with pet names like Pappy or Pap, Paps, Pap [your real name] and so on. Just remember, though, once a kid is attached to you and calling you by an affectionate name, it's a done deal. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether you're Uncle Canuck, Pap Canuck, or [just your real name]. Karen

i'm gonna have to concur with Karen. i had a step grandpa. he never had kids either. he married my gram when they were a little older. truth was i always called him John, which was his name. but after many years i referred to him as my step grandpa, and to his face called him John. i considered him a grandpa though do u feel like Uncle Canuk? or Canuk or what? r u ever gonna marry her or not really? or is it a more like, dont fix what's not broken

It's more like don't fix what's not busted. As for the Grandpaw thing the I guess we'll see what happens. We don't see much of Donnas daughter even though they live only a few blocks away. But I expect that to change once the kid comes along in the fall. The kids dad is really close to his family and they spent lots of time together so who knows. On a differant note I will be heading back up to Fort Mac tonight. Yes the union called and I have to go. Well, I don't have to go but if I want more than $30 in the bank I had better go. 4 months of not working is about all I can stand anyway. But I'm not looking forward to the smog and the driving.

I guess baby Chelea was born with a dislocated hip which means she'll have to wear a brace for a while (months? years? I don't know). Sad but you have to look on the bright side, which is, at least the Doctors spotted it right away. Otherwise she would have never been able to walk. Ever.
